Cornelis Hendrik à ROY: Catalogus Bibliothecae Medicae Cornelii Henrici a Roy. 5 volumes and supplement volume no 6. Amsterdam: Ludovicus van Es and S. de Grebber (for vol. 6) 1830 (vol. I-V) and 1834 (vol. VI). Demy 8vo. Ca. 2600 pages, of which 2588 numbered. Contemporary preliminary cardboard covers with title printing on spine labels.
Catalogue of the collection of Flemish physician and bibliophile Cornelis Hendrik à Roy (1750-1833), complete set including particularly rare vol. VI. - A prominent medic in Amsterdam, À Roy gathered one of the largest libraries related to medical science and history of it’s time, and meticulously documented his collection during the last years of his life. In autumn 1834, soon after his death, 18.034 lots of books, 3.011 portrait engravings of medics and scholars and 15 lots of library furniture out of À Roy’s bequest were offered at auction. On this occasion the small supplementary volume no. VI was published, containing an appendix as well as terms and conditions for the auction. - Section „Historia naturalis“ (vol. V) additionally bears numerous hand-written price quotations.
Provenance: Ex-library set of the „Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen“ in Haarlem with corresponding stamps, labels, remarks and also eliminations stamps of this society on front boards and title pages.
Preceeded copy lacks the frontispiece of vol. 6, showing the copper-engraved portrait of Cornelis Hendrik à Roy. However this engraving was not included regularly in the rare appendix.
Spines torn at joints, and sun tanned, inside marginally foxy, cut time-stained, otherwise well preserved volumes. Complete copies of »Bibliothecae Medicae« are very scarce, according to JAP and APO not one set was offered at auction since 1950.
