TRAYANOV, Teodor: Balgarski baladi [Bulgarian Ballads]. Cover and seven b/w plates by SIRAK SKITNIK. Frontispiece with a portrait of the author after a charcoal drawing by Michael Lyutov. Sofia: Khemus [1920]. 8vo. 80 p. Original publisher’s half cloth.

First edition of this significant symbolist volume of poetry, printed in 2000 copies, though hard to find. The distinctive illustrations by Sirak Skitnik based on a gouache cycle demonstrate prototypically how the artist domesticated stylistic devices of the avant-garde by abstracting local folkloristic motives, frequently of agrarian and/or religious character (e.g. nuns shouldering sheaves of grain) in an expressionist manner.

Cover worn and with traces of a former library-stamp, edges and corners somewhat torn. Front leaf and title page with hand-written inventory-no., inside partly finger-stained, generally fine.
