Emil ZSCHIMMER: VORLAGEN FÜR HOLZMALEREI [Patterns for Wood Painting]. 34 chromolithografic plates with around 100 illustrations. 5 issues [all published]. Leipzig: Glaser & Garte (Louis Glaser), s.a. [1876-79].
2°. [1 not numbered leaf (toc)]; VIII; VIII; VI; VI; VI plates on thick cardboard. Original publisher's ruby red calico with gilt ornamental title on front board and spine, fully gilt edges and decorative end papers made of silk moiré with gilt floral patterns.
Striking and particularly rare set of 34 beautiful plates containing lavishly coloured samples with ornamental paintings on wooden surfaces.
Contents: The plates show wood paintings in opulent historistic manner, mainly on household effects and smaller furniture, e.g. book covers, cigarette lighters, jewell cases, paper weights, pocket mirrors, sugar bowls, table tops, wallets etc., all printed in splendid multicolour and accurate chromolithography by Leipzig lithographer Louis Glaser, based on the original designs and drawings by Weimar painter Emil Zschimmer. The series was probably addressed to artists and artisans, nevertheless the introducing text leaf also propagates a company (Robert Friedel & Co., Stuttgart) which offers according products.
According to the editor's statement on the preliminary leaf, each of the 5 issues was also offered separately, however there are no single issues traceable at all in market history and institutional holdings alike. All sets known (see rarity) are preserved like the present, i.e. bound in one volume and without possible covers for the the single issues.
Also mentioned is the separate publication of an accompanying text volume by Fr. Lahnek, a fried of Zschimmer, titled »Anleitungen zur Holzmalerei nebst Anweisungen zum Poliren der gemalten Gegenstände« (Manual to Wood Painting, with Instructions How to Polish the Painted Objects«. Published in 1876 the 1st edition of this booklet however covers only the 1st issue of Zschimmer's series of plates. Two further, enlarged editions of text volume should appear until 1903.
Condition: Spine and boards in parts with shelf wear and with some staining, top and bottom of spine as well as corners bumped, margins of some plates minimally foxy, time and finger-stained, otherwise well preserved set indeed.
Rarity: Present outstanding set is of utmost rarity. OCLC/WorldCat, KVK, viaLibri Libraries and Google locate only 3 copies worldwide in institutional holdings, only one of them complete like ours: London (British Library), Vienna (MAK, quotes only 30 plates); Erlangen-Nürnberg (Univ. Lib., lacks plate no. 4). JAP/APO show only 1 auction result in the last 40 years (1998), ABPC none at all since 1972. Unkown to Schneider-Henn, Vorlagenwerke.
