8to (20:14,5). [I-IV], V-XI, [XII], [1-2], 159 [1] pages. Letterpress, coloured cliché. Fully grained dark-brown and black leatherette or sheepskin, the front cover with a design after Rackham (inversely to the end papers) stamped in gilt, as well as gilt pictorial spine title, gilt top edge and ribbon bookmark.
First edition of this selection of children rhymes by Arthur Rackham, this copy with a skilfully gilt tooled binding incorporating Rackhams drawing of 3 blind mice & the farmer’s wife (from the rhyme „Three blind mice…“), also inversely printed also at the end papers.
Condition: Top and bottom edge of spine, as well as margins and corners of binding with very slight wear, end papers foxy, otherwise very fresh copy of this gorgeous children book with a elaborate binding.
Rarity: ABPC (1973ff.), Drouot Digital, LotSearch and JAP (1950ff.) record only 3 copies with similar bindings (2014 (vellum), 2008, 2005).
