Jh., Bd. 1). Frontispiece with Bacon's portrait copper engraved by [Hermann Jakob] Tyroff. Pest: Weingand und Köpf 1783. 8°. [1 not pag. leaf (Front.)], [1 not pag. leaf (Titel)], pag. leafs A2-A5, [not numb. p. 13], pp. 14-430; [not numb. p. 31f.],pp. 433-812. Contemporary cardboard cover with black title printing on spine label and red cut throughout.

First German language edition of Bacon’s treatise »Of the Proficience and Advancement of Learning, Divine and Human« (1605), a „pioneering essay in support of empirical philosophy“ (Catherine Drinker Bowen) and most inspiring source for the figurative system of human knowledge later conceptualized and applied in D’Alembert’s and Diderot’s »Encyclopédie« (1751-72).

Hermann Jakob Tyroff’s full-paged engraved portrait of Francis Bacon here bound in as frontispiece is particularly rare, i.e. not mentioned at all in the most comprehensive list of works by the Nuremberg engraver's dynasty Tyroff compiled by Fritz Schulz for Thieme/Becker.

Inner part of front joint slightly wormy, joints with some faults, corners bumped, boards worn, inside in parts somewhat foxy, generally a solid copy of this rarely offered item indeed. JAP/APO shows only 6 auction records since 1950.
