8°. 32 not numbered leafs, 12 plates, each with tissue paper. Steel engraving and letterpress on thick paper, bound in contemporary ruby red cloth with gilt spine title, blind embossed ornamental boards and gilt edges.

Scarce English imprint of an anthology with German love poems from the Vormärz period, congenially illustrated with steel engravings after portraits of John Hayter and others.

Content: Present anthology contains 12 German male poet's romantic lyrics devoted to the female. All poems and accompanied by accurate steel engravings after portraits by John Hayter, Queen Victoria's Painter-in-Ordinary, and others. Contributors are Heinrich Heine, Emanuel Geibel, Franz Kugler, Fr. Marlow (i.e. Hermann Ludwig Wolfram), Friedrich Rückert and Silesius (Pseud.) Between 1835 and 1845 the London publishing house A. Asher & Co. of Fleet Street had also published a review with the same title.

Condition: Cover in parts sun bleached and with some light staining, some pages foxy and slightly finger-stained, otherwise well preserved.
