Fully grained red morocco leather over wooden boards on 5 raised bands, with gilt title on spine and front board incorporating the author’s monogram, a harp and a laurel wreath, as well as gilt dentelles, frames with floral ornaments on boards, all edges gilt and multicolour marbled endpapers.
First and only edition of this particularly hard to find volume with poems by Kinnersley Lewis, in a superb gilt morocco binding.
Content, Binding: The skilfully handcrafted binding is made of fully grained red morocco leather over wooden boards, and incorporates the author’s monogram, a harp and a laurel wreath on the front board, as well as gilt floral dentelles and frames.
The colophon states „indebtedness to Mr. Walter Crane for the design which ornaments the binding of this volume“. It is though not very plausible that present binding was designed by Crane, one of the most prolific artists and book illustrators of the Arts and Craft movement, as the artist is known for more pictorial bindings. The endpapers and the whole bookblock are made from the very same paper. The bookblock however was cut to fit the binding.
Attached is an extensive list with subscribers.
Condition: Corners and edges of binding with minimal wear, paper slightly time-stained, otherwise very well preserved copy indeed.
Rarity: OCLC/WorldCat records 8 copies only of this edition, whereof 4 in the UK, 1 in Ireland and 3 in U.S.-libraries; ABPC shows no auction record of this title at all.
